I am Margarita Torres PhD, a Mexican freelance researcher and educator based in Washington, DC. As a scholar I have worked in the Department of Communication at Universidad Iberoamericana as a full time professor, where I taught in the undergraduate program in Communications, in the Masters in Communication Program. I also coordinated the journalism area and the Right to Information Program.

I am also a cofounder and member of Periodistas de a Pie, a network of journalists based in Mexico City, mainly dedicated to the training of journalists with a human rights perspective.

My work is focused on the research, discussion and application of the right to information as the main approach. This approach implies the connection between journalism, academia and civic society. This includes topics as ethics in journalism and digital journalism combining access to public information, technology and open data. The final purpose to achieve is to empower citizens' participation for a better democracy.


I have been teaching at Universidad Iberoamericana at the Master Program since 2011, and at the undergraduate Communication program since 2012. The classes I have taught are:

During recent years, I have been teaching and organizing different workshops and other open spaces to dialogue and learn about journalism and to do journalism. The main topics of my workshops have been Ethics and Journalism, Access to Public Information as a tool for investigative journalism, Right to Information and Tools for Digital Journalism.

Some of the activities include workshops with the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas, Periodistas de a Pie and Red de Periodistas de Juárez, among other, and the collaboration to organize Migrahack México, and the Foro Latinoamericano de Medios Digitales y Periodismo.

Conferences and Publications

Conferences, seminars and forums are the perfect spaces to present research, but also to share, hear and learn new and different perspectives on communication and journalism, to dialague with colleagues, to understand the problems in our regions, and find perspectives to change our reality.
